Alongside the rewards of this way of life come significant pressures—even in the best of years: uncertain markets, weather extremes, financial strain, long hours, isolation, and the emotional weight of responsibilities that often span generations. Today, Kansas agriculture is facing a deepening crisis. The warning signs are all around us: Farmers die by suicide at rates estimated to be 3.5 times higher than the general population. American farm debt is projected to reach a record $624 billion. Farm bankruptcies increased for the second consecutive year in 2025, with a 70% increase across the Midwest. These statistics represent real people, families, businesses, and communities. In response, we (Buhler & Hoffnungsau Mennonite Churches) are launching Soil & Soul: Growing the Good Life, an initiative designed to foster honest conversation, practical support, education, and hope. Our goal is not only to better understand the challenges facing those in agriculture, but also to strengthen the relationships, resources, and support systems that help people thrive—not merely survive. The phrase Growing the Good Life reminds us that a healthy agricultural community depends on more than productive soil. It requires healthy people, healthy families, healthy businesses, and healthy communities. Caring for the soul is just as important as caring for the land. We are reaching out because you serve an important role in the life and business of farmers and agricultural producers. We consider you part of the agricultural community's "First Line"—the bankers, lenders, agronomists, veterinarians, equipment dealers, crop insurance agents, accountants, co-op employees, clergy, healthcare providers, and others who interact with producers regularly. You see farmers at their best and often during their most stressful moments. Your work contributes not only to their financial success, but also to their overall well-being.
